Kimono rental in Kyoto at a glance
Many visitors rent a kimono for the walk up to Kiyomizu-dera and through the old lanes of Higashiyama. A rental is a separate service from the temple visit. You pay the shop for the outfit and the temple for entry, and neither includes the other.
There is no single city price. The figures below are examples from two shops in 2026, not an average. Sets, extras, tax and return rules differ, so compare the whole offer and not just the first number.

Okamoto extras
Hairstyling starts at JPY 500 before tax. A decoration package costs JPY 550 including tax. Do not assume that styling is free or that the base price is the final total.

Styling, returns and extras differ from shop to shop. Ask what the price covers before you pay.
Return times and wearing a kimono in the evening
The standard return is earlier than the evening openings at the temple.
Same-day return
Okamoto asks for the return at 5:50 p.m. and closes at 6 p.m. Kanwa asks for the return by 5 p.m. on the same day.
Next-day return
Okamoto allows return by 5 p.m. the next day for JPY 1,000, with ID and a cash deposit of JPY 10,000. Kanwa offers a free next-day return by arrangement.
Return at your hotel
Okamoto takes the kimono back at a hotel reception by 9 a.m. the next morning. The price is JPY 2,000 before tax for one person and JPY 1,500 per person before tax from two people. This depends on the hotel and the season.
Evening at the temple
The temple closes at 6 p.m. on most days. The evening openings in 2026 ran from 27 March to 5 April and 14 to 16 August, and run from 21 to 30 November, until 9:30 p.m. with last entry at 9 p.m. A normal rental has to come back before then, so ask for an extended return option when you book.
Night illumination dates →Booking, cancelling and returning to another branch
Book early for busy dates.
Book ahead
Kanwa recommends an early booking for weekends, cherry blossom and autumn. Okamoto takes bookings on its website, and groups need to ask separately.
Cancellation
At Okamoto, a cancellation on the day of the booking costs JPY 3,300. Give notice by 1 p.m. on the day before. Other shops set their own terms.
Another branch
Returning the kimono at a different branch is not possible in every case. Okamoto charges from JPY 1,000 for a branch change, and JPY 1,500 for Arashiyama. Ask the shop before you book.
Etiquette at the temple and in Gion
A rental contract is not a photo permit. The temple does not allow wedding, cosplay or fashion shoots with models, and commercial filming needs permission. Drones, tripods and monopods are not allowed on the grounds.
In Gion, the city's 2026 guidelines ask visitors not to touch or follow geiko and maiko or photograph them without permission, not to enter private property and not to block streets as a group. Respect signs on side lanes. Plan the slopes and steps slowly in sandals. If a second shrine is on your list, Fushimi Inari is a separate site with its own etiquette guide. July and August are the hottest months, with average highs of 32.0 and 33.7 degrees C.
