How a walking tour fits the temple
The temple visit, the walk through Higashiyama, Gion and a rented kimono are separate things with separate prices. A walking tour guides you along the lanes and explains what you pass. It does not pay for temple admission, transport or meals unless the listing says so.
On foot, the route from Higashiyama subway station to the temple takes about 35 minutes by way of Nene-no-michi, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, without long stops. The route from Shijo-Kawaramachi passes Hanamikoji and the Yasaka Shrine. A guide turns that walk into a half day. The examples below show what a few tours cost in 2026.

Walking tour examples compared

The tour types in detail
What each format involves.
Small-group walk
The group walk in English meets at Ben's Cookies Kyoto Shijo and ends at Kiyomizu-dera. It takes 3 hours with a maximum of 12 participants and requires a booking. It goes ahead in the rain. Cancellations are refunded at least 24 hours before the start and not after that.
Gion →Private walk
The private tour meets at Minamiza and covers about 3 km in 3 hours for up to 10 guests. Admissions, transfers and meals are not included. The route has stairs and slopes, and it does not suit wheelchairs or strollers.
Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka →Bus with a guide
The Keihan Bus ticket combines the ride, a guide from Gojozaka and the temple admission. It runs only on selected trips and requires a reservation. A plain ride on the same line costs JPY 500 for adults and JPY 250 for children. The weekday Kiyomizu-dera line is planned from 1 July 2026 to 29 January 2027.
Getting there →Kimono and a walk
A rented kimono is not a tour. If you want to dress up for the lanes, rent first, then walk on your own or with a guide. The rental page explains return times and what you may do in a kimono at the temple.
Kimono rental →What to check before you book
The wording differs more than the prices.
Is the temple ticket included?
Most walking tours say no. Add JPY 500 per adult for Kiyomizu-dera in 2026, and JPY 800 if the walk also enters Kodai-ji.
Start and end point
A tour that ends at the temple leaves you on the hillside, with the bus stop at Gojozaka about 10 minutes downhill.
Stairs and steps
Sannenzaka has stone steps, and the temple grounds climb the slope. Check the access notes on the listing if someone in your group uses a wheelchair or stroller.
Cancellation and weather
Terms differ by provider. One group walk refunds a cancellation up to 24 hours before the start and runs in the rain. Read the terms of the offer you choose.
Group size and language
The examples above run in English with 10 to 12 people at most. Smaller groups let you ask more questions and keep the walk quieter in the lanes.
Respect the neighborhoods you walk through. Do not block entrances or step onto private land, and take photos only where allowed. For Gion, see the Gion page for the rules on photographing. If you want a tour of another Kyoto site, the sister guide lists Fushimi Inari tours.

Kyoto walking tours: frequently asked questions
Does a walking tour include Kiyomizu-dera admission?
The examples on this page do not, except the Keihan bus ticket with a guide. Admission is JPY 500 for adults in 2026, paid at the temple.
How much does a Kyoto walking tour cost?
The group walk from Shijo to Kiyomizu-dera lists JPY 2,450 to 3,850 for ages 16 and up, and the private Higashiyama walk lists JPY 28,000 per person. These are single products in 2026, not a market range.
How long does a tour from Gion to Kiyomizu-dera take?
Both walk examples take about 3 hours. The temple visit comes on top of that, so plan a half day.
Can I join a tour with a wheelchair or stroller?
The group walk is not suited to wheelchairs because of stairs, and strollers are possible only if you carry them. The private walk lists the same limits.
What if it rains?
The group walk runs in the rain. If you cancel, the refund applies when you cancel at least 24 hours before the start.
Is this site a tour operator?
No. It is an independent guide with no link to the temple, Kyoto City or any provider named on this page.
