Where to stay in Higashiyama
Higashiyama is the eastern hillside of Kyoto where Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka and the Yasaka Pagoda stand. Staying here puts the temple within a short walk. Staying in Gion or near Kyoto Station gives you more options and a bus or train ride to the slope.
This page names three properties near the temple. It is not a ranking. Rates change with the date, the number of guests, meals and the cancellation terms, so check the total for your own dates.

Three places to stay near Kiyomizu-dera
Named because they sit close to the temple, not as a recommendation.
Saka Hotel Kyoto
The address is 4-200 Kiyomizu, Higashiyama-ku. Allow about 5 minutes on foot from Gojozaka and a further 5 minutes to the temple. These are estimates, not a guarantee for every walker.
Park Hyatt Kyoto
The hotel is on Ninenzaka, at 360 Kodaiji Masuyacho. The hotel offers views of the Yasaka Pagoda and the machiya townhouses around it, but not every room category has them.
Ryokan Motonago
A small inn on Nene-no-michi below Kodai-ji, at 511 Washio-cho, with 11 traditional guest rooms in a machiya townhouse converted in 1905. It has no car park of its own. Allow about 15 minutes on foot from Gion-Shijo.
Kyoto accommodation tax in 2026
New rates since 1 March 2026.
Kyoto charges the tax per person and per night, not per room. It is based on the accommodation charge without meals and without consumption tax, but including any service charge. It applies to all types of accommodation inside Kyoto City, and it can apply to children when an accommodation charge applies.
| Accommodation charge per person and night | Tax per person and night |
|---|---|
| Under JPY 6,000 | JPY 200 |
| JPY 6,000 to 19,999 | JPY 400 |
| JPY 20,000 to 49,999 | JPY 1,000 |
| JPY 50,000 to 99,999 | JPY 4,000 |
| JPY 100,000 and above | JPY 10,000 |
A charge of JPY 25,000 per person and night falls in the JPY 1,000 band. For a room shared by two guests, work out the band per person, not from the room rate. Check whether the price you see on a booking page includes the tax before you compare two stays.
How to choose a base
Four things that change the answer.
Opening times
The temple opens at 6 a.m. daily. In 2026 it also opens until 9:30 p.m. on 21 to 30 November, with last entry at 9 p.m. A short walk makes the early start and the late return easier.
Best time to visit →Steps and luggage
Sannenzaka has stone steps, and the lanes outside are not step-free. Look at the route from the bus stop or station to your door on a map before you book. The road in front of the main gate is closed to traffic from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and a map app can show an entrance you cannot use.
Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka →Cars
The temple has no car park and recommends public transport or a taxi. Ryokan Motonago has no car park either, so ask any hotel about parking before you rely on it. From 7 October to 10 December 2026 the Kiyomizuzaka tourist car park takes no private cars.
Getting to Kiyomizu-dera →Evenings
Gion is a living neighbourhood. Do not touch, follow or photograph geiko and maiko without permission, do not enter private property and do not block streets in a group.
Gion →Another trip to southern Kyoto? Where to stay near Fushimi Inari has its own guide.
